The Fortified Town in Fredrikstad is a popular destination all year round. Here you will find useful information about how to get here, where to park, stay overnight and when it is open.

Transport to The Fortified Town


The Fortified Town is centrally located in Fredrikstad and is easy to get to by bus, car, bicycle and on foot.
The city ferry runs all year round and is free. It stops at several places along the river and provides easy access to The Fortified Town from the city centre, Cicignon and Gressvik.


Several buses stop close to The Fortified Town, with the nearest stop at Kongsten. From there it is only a few minutes’ walk to Gamlebyen. Buses 8 (Øra), 113 and 123 (Torsnes) go from Fredrikstad city centre to Kongsten. See Entur for updated travel suggestions.

Cars are allowed in The Fortified Town. It is possible to drive in and park both inside and just outside the Fortified Town.

Cycling and walking are well-organized. There are walking and cycling paths from the city center and along the river. There is bicycle parking at the ferry terminal at Cicignon and in The Fortified Town.

Parking in and at The Fortified Town

It is possible to park inside the Fortified Town, but there are limited spaces. We recommend parking outside the Fortified Town at Kongsten.

Street Parking in The Fortified Town:

  • Free hourly parking is available in parts of Voldgaten, Raadhusgaten, at Glasshytta, Toldbodgaten and at the ferry terminal.
  • Paid parking applies in Laboratoriegataten, Smedjegataten, Voldgataten, Tøihusgataten and Kirkegaten.
  • Certain areas are reserved for residents and businesses with contract parking.

Outside the Fortified Town:

  • There is free parking for up to three hours at Brakkesletta and above the cemetery.

Kongsten and Brakkesletta have good capacity with free parking for up to three hours – a good starting point for a visit to the Fortified Town.

Opening Hours at the Fortified Town

The Fortified Town of Fredrikstad is open and accessible 24/7, all year round. The area does not have common opening hours, as it consists of many independent shops, galleries, cafes and attractions.

Opening hours vary from location to location, and are often affected by season and events.

General:

  • Most shops and galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, usually from morning to afternoon, and open all days during the high season.
  • Many cafes and restaurants are open several days a week, and some are open daily during the summer season.
  • The museums in the Fortified Town have their own opening hours that follow the season, with opening on weekends, school holidays, and high season.
